Boasting a population of almost 2.8 million, Miami-Dade is a county in the southeastern portion of the State of Florida between Monroe County (Key West and the Florida Keys) and Broward County (Fort Lauderdale, Westin and Sunrise). The county is the 7th most populous county in the United States, the largest by population in Florida (and the third largest county in the state by land area). Miami-Dade’s county seat is the City of Miami (previous county seats have included Juno Beach as well as Indian Key).
Along with Broward County and West Palm Beach County (West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, and Delray Beach) the County makes up what is considered the Miami metropolitan area, which has a population of almost 6.2 million. Miami-Dade County is one of three counties in South Florida with an area larger than the state of Rhode Island and Delaware.
The county boasts two national marks: Everglades National Park and Biscayne National Park (along with the Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve).
Miami Dade County was created on January 18, 1836 and named after Francis Langhorne Dade, a Brevet Major killed in action in the Second Seminole Indian War.
Once known as Dade County, the area today includes 34 incorporated municipalities and encompasses more 2,000 square miles. Cities such as Pinecrest, Doral, Hialeah, and Miami Beach are just some of the cities within Miami that we serve. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Biscayne Bay, the Florida Keys and Broward County it’s a major hub of international travel. Miami Dade County had an average of 45 million passengers during the last Census or about 122,000 passengers daily traveling through its ports including The Port of Miami and Miami International Airport, making it an Intellectual Property gateway to Latin America, Europe, and the Caribbean.
Miami Dade County’s population is a melting pot of ethnicities primarily from all over the world. Major foreign ancestry groups include Cuban, Colombian, Haitian, Nicaraguan and Puerto Rican.
