Pineapples, mangoes, and citrus fruit plus immaculate beaches and year round sun in the sunshine state provoked the creation the famous Boynton Hotel, built by former American Civil War Major Nathan Boynton.
By the time the major died in 1911, the fruit was shipped by first settlers on Florida East Coast Railroad across the country and the hotel and city had already turned into a thriving society with a courthouse, the town’s first planned subdivision which was finished in 1926. As the land increased in value, more housing developments were created along the Intracoastal Waterway and Federal Highway and Dairy Farms were founded to the west of the city becoming a profitable economy for Palm Beach County. By 1921, the town acquired the beach site of the old 1911 Boynton Hotel and Lewis S. Howe created one of first beach casino with a large dining hall, locker rooms, showers and party venue for socialites of the era. In 1967 the property was demolished a turned into a beach park.
Since the 1920s Boynton each Oceanfront Park has undergone a renovations including its boardwalk which was rebuilt out of recycled plastic. It was voted the best Family each by the Palm Beach Post in 2001.
In 2011 the boardwalk was renovated again along with the marina. The multi-million dollar renovation plan called for the demolition of a 30 year old dive shop to extend the view from the boardwalk out into the Intracoastal. The $800,000 renovation project created a 250-foot boardwalk made of ipe or ee-pay wood or Brazilian walnut along with and a 180-foot sidewalk plus 4,500 square feet of green space including the planting of coconut trees and tropical plants.
The Boynton Beach Harbor Marina is located half a miles south of the Boynton Inlet and offers activities such as scuba diving charters, jet-ski rentals, boat rentals, and waterfront dining.
Located north of Delray Beach and south Palm Beach allows for direct access to some of Florida’s coral and artificial reefs along with eco- friendly experiences at the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge.
The Boynton Beach Mall owned by the Washington Prime Group includes anchor tenants like Macy’s Dillard’s, Cinemark and Christ Fellowship with about 135 stores and restaurants. Built by Edward J. DeBartolo Corporation with a similar layout to that of the Coral Square Mall. The mall was initially known for its Monarch butterfly statue and fountains of a boy and his dog and a girl pouring water.
Although known as the “Gateway to the Gulfstream” for its scenic beaches and openness to the sea. It offers year round live music concerts such as Rock The Plaza Boynton Beach and the integration of art in public places and the stimulation of education through the installation of art throughout the city.
